Neil J. Smith joined Mackenzie Hughes in 2005 as an associate at the firm. He is a member of the business department focusing in bankruptcy law. He represents businesses in bankruptcy proceedings, and he assists businesses with debt reorganization, workouts and bankruptcy litigation. He also provides support to other associates and partners in bankruptcy and collection matters.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree summa cum laude in Public Communications in 2002 from Syracuse University, Neil attended St. John's University School of Law, where he graduated with a Juris Doctorate in 2005. He was admitted to the New York Bar in 2006.

Neil is a member of the Onondaga, New York State, and American Bar Associations. He is also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Central New York Bankruptcy Bar Association. He volunteers with the Onondaga County Bar Association's Volunteer Lawyers' Project .

Prior to joining Mackenzie Hughes, Neil was a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute Law Review. While there he wrote an article entitled "F.C.C. v. Nextwave: Plain Meaning or Just Plain Wrong?" which described conflicts between FCC regulations and bankruptcy law.

When Neil has a few moments to spare, he enjoys studying history and philosophy, and he is active in local politics.
